Basingstoke is a large market town located in the county of Hampshire, some 46 miles south-west of central London. Basingstoke was once a traditional provincial settlement, but in the twentieth century, it became a popular residential overspill for people working in London. Basingstoke lies on a popular rail route into the city, making it an ideal commuter town.
Owing to migration from London, the population of this once-idyllic market town has grown enormously, and now stands at around 88,000. The wider borough area has a population of more than 155,000, making it one of the largest commuter towns in the London orbit.
Basingstoke estate agents often receive inquiries from people who want to live in Basingstoke because of its historical heritage. The town is home to some impressive historical landmarks, including the Tudor palace of Basing House in nearby Old Basing, and the traditional market centre.
Basingstoke is one of the oldest settlements in South East England. There’s a reference to the town in the Domesday Book of 1086, and it has held a market charter since 1203, more than 800 years ago.
Basingstoke wasn’t always called by that name. In the Domesday Book, the scribes referred to it as Basingestoches, meaning the "town of the people of western Baze"
Today, Basingstoke is a thriving financial and commercial centre in its own right, independent of London. It is home to a range of large national companies, as well as a host of independent, local businesses. All these features make it a desirable place to live.
